The Gospel of St. Matthew is the starting point on which Barthold Heinrich Brockes bases his passion text dating from 1712. At this time, the text Der für die Sünde der Welt gemarterte und sterbende Jesus (Jesus who Suffered and Died for the Sins of the World) was among the most frequently set passion texts, inspiring works by notable composers including not only George Frideric Handel but also Reinhard Keiser, Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Mattheson. Evocative and dramatic language is used to relate the course of events from the last supper to the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Brockes’ unsparing account of Christ’s suffering inspired Handel to write his only large-scale sacred work employing a German text, into which he brought intense expression of emotion and richly varied instrumental colour.
